In the process of using imfusion to simulate ultrasound image frames, I encountered the following problems

Hello, everyone
In the process of using imfusion to simulate ultrasound image frames, I encountered the following problems. Could you help me to answer them?
1. As shown in Figure 1, I would like to ask what these indicators of ultrasonic simulation are and whether there are relevant documents to introduce them.
2. Is there any requirement for the frame simulation of ultrasound images compared with MRI or CT images? For example, the effect of MRI images generated by different instruments will be different. Is there such a problem?

Hi,
Sure, we can help you:)

Regarding 1:
These are tunable parameters that will affect your resulting simulation:

  • Attenuation: The attenuation of the ultrasound signal at reflective tissue boundaries.
  • Reflection Gain: The gain of the reflected signal at tissue boundaries.
  • Noise Strength: The amplitude of the noise to add to the simulated image.
  • Noise Size: The size of the noise pattern to add to the simulated image. Smaller values will result in more coarse noise.

In the bottom of your image, you also see Ultrasound Sweep Definition parameters - this is because you invoked the algorithm only with your CT, and without a reference sweep. Here, you can define the sweep by placing two splines (center spline and direction spline) which define the ultrasound sweep motion and the number of frames, the depth, the probe width, the angle, and the alignment of the frames.

Regarding 2:

  • For the Ultrasound Simulation algorithm (the one that works on CT images), it should not be that sensitive to the machine, as it uses a simple model to derive the reflection coefficients from the CT.
  • There is also a Hybrid Ultrasound Simulation which only works on labelmaps, so it won’t be sensitive to the machine at all.
  • Currently, we have no Ultrasound simulation that works directly from MR.

Hope this helps!
Best,
Sasha
