Azure Kinect vs SR305 for short range scanning

I’ve read your recommendations and understand that for short range scanning the SR305 is preferred (other than the textures). My question is for short range scanning how much worse is the Azure kinect? If it’s fairly close I’ll likely get the kinect since I can use it with better results for other things (like mocap) but if it’s night and day I will pick up a SR305.

Was mainly curious how it was since it’s a much newer sensor if it’s TOF sensor was getting close to the older structured light sensors for geometry detail.

Hello,

the difference at a close range definitely would not be very significant. So, if texture is important for you, it is safe to use Kinect. Unfortunately we don’t have the concrete accuracy numbers for comparison yet. So this is just a qualitative assessment.
